***** Notes on Wildland Firefighting Requirements ******

The qualifications for employment as a federal firefighter are:

1) Must be under the maximum entry age of 37 for an initial appointment in a primary position.

2) Must meet either

i) OPM medical standards or;

ii)if applying for a DoD firefighter position, must meet NFPA medical standards, and;

3) if applying for a DoD firefighter position, must hold all certifications required for the position.

If the agency has a mutual aid agreement that requires it to respond to wildland fires, then it may want its firefighters to be red card certified.  This is a condition (not a qualification for employment) and is subject to impact and implementation negotiations.  Such negotiations might include asking for volunteers; no penalty for those who fail the  "pack test"; a phase-in period where only new-hires must be red card certified, etc.
